Centre In Focus: Our Lady Mother Of Poor, Tilamola
Since we started our grassroots program a couple of years ago, we’ve celebrated a lot of varied successes. Amongst the many, one that we’re particularly proud of is the DSY U13 State Championship title won by our grassroots center, Our Lady Mother Of Poor, Tilamola.
While titles and championships aren’t really the main criteria that we put our focus on at our training centers, it’s always good to see our efforts on the training pitch bear fruit.
Tilamola is a small village in the Quepem district that doesn’t really have much to boast about, but the boys from Our Lady Mother of Poor, are making it their goal, to change that.
The championship-winning side didn’t have it easy. They’ve been training together for the better part of three years under the guidance of our coach Johnson Fernandes. After a long day at school, they lace their football boots on and make their way to the training ground in the afternoon sun.
When tournaments come knocking around the corner, the team turns up for special practices early in the morning. They train separately for up to three weeks before the tournament begins. Hard work, determination, and teamwork are some qualities that these lads inherently possess.
Last year, they came close in the Junior Gaurs League but got knocked out in the semi’s to eventually finish 3rd. This year, they went one better and made it to the finals but agonizingly lost out to Mount Mary’s High School in the penalty shoot-out. However, in the DSY U13 State Championship, they left nothing to chance. They emerged as zonal champions and comfortably beat Loyola High School by two goals to nil.
Grassroots coach Johnson agrees that these are a special bunch of players, who have the will and the confidence to keep winning. We hope that these young gaurs continue to have the same passion and determination and hopefully make their way to our senior team in the future. Keep an eye out on these boys, and remember, you heard about them here first!
