The Launch Of The Junior Gaur League!

 In Community, Game, Grassroots

The Forca Goa Foundation launched its annual statewide mini league, “The Junior Gaurs League” on a cool and crisp February morning at Father Agnel Central School, Pilar. In its second season, the league promises to improve on last years tournament which was hailed for its professionalism and organization, by including a new age category and also including girls in the tournament.

We could be wrong, but it’s possibly the first time girls are being included in a tournament on this side and this is to reinforce our commitment to making football inclusive for all children. The competition has 64 schools from across the state participating. There are 32 teams each in the North and South of Goa, including 16 schools that are part of the Foundation’s Grassroots program. The North and South Zone teams are further divided into eight groups of four teams each that play each other on a home and away basis. The top teams from each group qualify for the quarterfinals.

The mini-league, which had around 1600 children take part last season, will possibly engage with over 2500 children from all over Goa this year. That’s 2500 children from the age of 6-14 who will get the opportunity to showcase their talent in front of qualified coaches and scouts and earn their way into the FC Goa youth squads.

The tournament kicked off at 9:00 am with four busloads of excited children making their way to field. Sunshine School, Fr. Agnel Central, Fairyland School and St. Andrews had the honor of being the first group to start off the league and FC Goa defensive stalwart, Bruno Pinheiro, lent his presence and kicked off proceedings.

If the excitement and talent on display during the first round was a marker of things to come, expect a whole lot of goals and hundreds of delighted celebrations during the remainder of the tournament. Through the Junior Gaurs League, we wish to get children from across the state to participate and enjoy the beautiful game. It also gives us the opportunity to scout talented players and help develop them further.
