Behind The Game with Somshekar Kumbar
Over the years we’ve seen our grassroots program grow bigger and encompass 16 centers all over the state. Within these centers to we see more and more kids signing up as they find happiness with a ball at their feet.
To ensure that all the kids get the attention they need to develop, we continuously need enthusiastic coaches who are passionate about the game and have a desire to encourage and develop kids to be the best that they can.
We recently welcomed two new coaches, Caliston Vaz and Somshekhar Kumbar to our growing coaching fraternity and sat down with them to know more about what gets them excited about coaching.
FG: What do you like about coaching?
SK: I was always a leader in the school. I used to be the monitor as well as captain and so coaching kids for me felt like a natural progression
FG: What is your favorite formation?
SK: It all depends on the players available but if given the right personnel, I would prefer a 4-5-1 formation. I like working with a strong midfield
FG: One person who influenced you to become a coach?
SK: Sir Naresh who is my mentor at FC Goa played a big role in me becoming a coach.
FG: Pep Guardiola or Jose Mourinho?
SK: Pep Guardiola definitely. His football has great style and we all know how effective he can be.
FG: One footballer you’d love to have on your team?
SK: That’s an easy question. It would be Ronaldinho for sure. Players like that don’t need much coaching, you just let their talent take over.
FG: If not a coach what would you do?
SK: I have a family run business that I also work on at the side, so if I wasn’t passionate about football, I’d probably be running my business full-time.
