In conversation with Milagres Carvalho, development officer and grassroots coach at FC Goa, steadfast working towards developing future stars of football.
What is the main objective of this grassroots program?
The program aims to introduce football to the lives of young boys/ girls and motivate them to get involved in the sport. Our secondary objective with the program is to scout Goan talent from across the state, so that someday the young players can join their idols in FC Goa’s top ranks.
What are the type of values are you looking to build among these kids?
The two important pillars that form the foundation of every footballer are discipline and respect for the game, Furthermore, we also aim to develop well-rounded players in terms of technique, tactics, ball handling under pressure and the ability to score goals.
Do you have a particular coaching style or philosophy?
My coaching philosophy is based in a total football mentality with emphasis on keeping the ball at your feet at all times.
Any coach that you look upto?
As far as idols go, my inspiration has always been Armando Colaco. A man who commands respect from every team he’s worked with and is also regarded as one of the most successful managers in Indian Football. Mr. Colaco is the first Indian manager to take an Indian team to the AFC Cup semis.
How do you measure success as a coach?
It fills me up with great pride to say that my results speak for themselves. My players are often called upon for state and national selection camp. So I guess, my players being successful would be an appropriate measure of success for me.
