Behind The Game – Clinton Pacheco
Behind The Game – In Conversation with Grassroots Coach Clinton Pacheco
Clinton Pacheco is one of the youngest coaches on our grassroots roster. A passionate coach, keen to focus on children’s mental development, he hopes to coach the national team someday. Here’s our interview with him.
How has the grassroots program progressed this year for you?
The grassroots program has been a great experience. It’s always fun coaching young boys and girls. This was my first year with FC Goa and the learning curve has been incredible. I hope to continue improving consistently.
What, according to you, is the best part of working with kids?
The kids are always enthusiastic. The energy and excitement they bring to the pitch is infectious and it’s a pleasure to work with them. They pick up things quickly and it’s singularly joyful see kids play and enjoy this beautiful game.
If you weren’t a coach, what career do you think you would have chosen?
I like working with people and training them. If I wasn’t a coach, I’d probably work in the human resource department of a corporate or hotel.
One key quality you think kids need to possess to excel at football?
I always encourage my kids to think and develop the mental aspect of their game. I feel that’s what makes you a better player and it’s important to think like a professional at a very young age. Decision making, with or without the ball will only happen if the kids have developed a good mind-set from the beginning.
Your dream coaching job?
I hope to one day coach my favourite team – Manchester United, and of course coach the Indian national football team.
